Based on research, 90% of managers know their boss’s performance expectations. Alignment between a manager and boss is crucial to success. A good way to start the conversation between a manager and their boss would be for each to identify the top three priorities the manager needs to focus on. Setting clear expectations of “what success looks like” can make the difference between average performance and outstanding performance.

WHAT ARE YOUR BOSS’S PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS?

Based on recent research conducted by BetterManager of one thousand managers, we asked, “Do you know what your boss expects of you?” These mutually agreed upon expectations drive performance. The results showed that 90% know what their boss expects of them. This is so important to a manager’s success!

ALIGNMENT ON PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS IS CRUCIAL TO SUCCESS

Why is alignment so important? Misalignment can occur when the expectations are not expressly stated. Assumptions are made, and we tend to gather information to support our assumptions, rather than search for the real answers. Our experience as coaches has taught us that if managers know what’s expected of them, and they are willing and able to reach those expectations, they will meet or exceed them. It’s as simple as that.

A good way to start the conversation between a manager and their boss would be for each to identify the top three priorities the manager needs to focus on. Look for alignment. Discuss any misalignment. Develop a plan for off-loading any priorities that don’t have maximum impact on the organization’s top priorities.
